Performance of Students in Final External Examinations remains 100% pass-rate
HECOIN has had students maintaining high grades during the semester and reflected in their final external examination results. Nine students sat the City and Guilds Assessment in 2009 and all students received between 75 and 85%. In January 2011, eight students sat the final external examinations and the grades were 75% to 81%. On May 12, 2011, eighteen (18) students sat the International Diploma in Health Care Assistants and continue to impress external examiners. They received grades from 74%-91%. Students received maximum grades in some areas of assessment. Students are marked in three (3) areas: Critical Thinking Multiple Choice Questions, Practical/Clinical Assessment and Attitude. For the 4th sitting in a row; August 2011, students of HECOIN Batch 4 in Spanish Town and Montego Bay (including four male nurses; one receiving the highest mark) received 100% passes again. Some of these students came into the programme without CSEC subjects and were able to gain high grades in the assessment conducted by independent assessors from Examinations Assessment Services, EAS under City and Guilds of London.
From these results, you would have realized that all our students generally maintain above average or a B standard throughout the programme.

HECOIN thinks one of the best ways to ensure this, is to have Nurses who are trained in Administration, at the forefront giving information; which often relates to nursing. Over the years, we have realized that this method has worked and are committed to continue in this way.

INTERNATIONAL DIPLOMA IN PRACTICAL NURSING
FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER IN THE HISTORY OF JAMAICA, HEALTH, EDUCATION AND COUNSELLING INSTITUTE, HECOIN HAS LIFTED THE BAR OF PRACTICAL NURSING WHERE THESE PROFESSIONALS ARE NOW CERTIFIED INTERNATIONALLY.
The International Diploma in Practical Nursing; a 2-year programme; similar to the Enrolled Nursing curriculum in Jamaica and foreign Licensed Practical Nurse/LPN programmes, has been developed with international standards and is accepted by 100 Commonwealth countries in the world. An LPN is one of the most hands-on members of a patient care team and in a hospital environment, LPNs provide basic nursing care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, RN or a Medical Doctor. In general, they perform many important tasks that assist RNs and Physicians and benefit patients.
An October 2009 CBC News report revealed a shortage of Registered Nurses in Canada that has prompted the Alberta Health Services to seek the hiring of more LPNs to fill the 6,000 nurse gap. The plan was to hire 1,000 more LPNs over a two-year period. The shortage is such that AHS is recruiting LPNs from a number of countries; including Jamaica. This would seem to present opportunities for American-trained LPNs who may be desirous of relocating to the United States’ northern neighbour, for purposes of employment
With the populations living longer and the shortage of nurses in many specialities, those who are or become LPNs could possibly discover that the road leading to career advancement is a smoother ride than expected. It can be speculated that all things considered, the average salary of LPNs may indeed increase due to supply and demand.
A recent survey revealed that the demand for LPNs in Canada is far greater than supply and that country will need approximately 200,000 LPNs by 2014. HECOIN is now at the cutting edge of being able to assist in making this a reality.
